Inulin is a probiotic, soluble dietary fiber that is found, among other things, in salsify and chicory. The substance is therefore found primarily in foods that are "not all that often on the menu in many households," according to the experts. Yet the substance supports a healthy diet without hunger. Inulin can be stirred into yogurt, muesli or milk and is a healthy alternative due to its low calorie count of two calories per gram.
Inulin takes its name from the plant elecampane, also known as Inula helénium in Latin, in which the substance was first discovered in 1804. Today it is known that inulin is a naturally occurring fructose polymer and is synthesized by many plants. It is a natural polysaccharide from fructose.
Inulin is also found in many plants. There, the water-soluble substance serves as an energy store and carrier. Inulin is particularly abundant in bananas, garlic, parsnips, onions and cereals, among others.
Our body is not able to produce the enzyme inulinase - the basis for inulin - itself. That is why the consumption of larger amounts of inulin can cause gastrointestinal complaints such as diarrhea and flatulence. Gradual integration into the diet is recommended. Inulin has no other side effects, and therefore regular intake of the substance is safe. Although the intestine itself cannot utilize inulin, certain intestinal bacteria such as lactobacilli (lactic acid bacteria) are able to digest the substance.
